Historical Atlas of Ripon Subscription
The Historical Atlas of Ripon – A new project by Subscription
If you bought or were given an Historical Map of Ripon recently you may want to own the more descriptive Historical Atlas of Ripon – The flexibound Atlas will examine the finer details of Ripon’s history through cartography, commentary and illustration, with historical maps, such as Jeffrey’s of 1771, and at least four new major maps depicting Ripon in the Anglo-Saxon period, the Medieval period, the 19th century and the 20th century.
While the Historical map gave insight into some of Ripon’s most well known features, such as Ripon Cathedral and the famous Hornblower, the atlas will give additional specialist information on the elements that hold greater international significance, including Wilfrid’s early religious settlement, Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey, and the military camps from both world wars.
Previous Atlases of York & Oxford
The Atlas will be several steps further for all of those interested in history, geology, architecture , archaeology, and topography, for it will follow Ripon’s composition across the centuries from Market Town to Cathedral City, and achieve a greater understanding of what has created the Ripon we know today.
As it is such an enormous project, the organisers are expecting to publish in Autumn 2027, The atlas will be funded through subscription to allow the subscriber to be a part of Ripon’s history leaving a legacy for future generations.
The Atlas will be publish in association with The Historic Towns Trust as part of their British Historic Towns Atlas series, a programme founded in 1955 that works with local historians, geographers and archaeologists.
Their unique multi-layer mapping techniques reveal a new way to visualise the complex development of Britain’s towns and cities, enabling us to better analyse the impact of events and communities over time.
The HTT use their research to develop teaching materials for schools and to engage the public with free talks, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to influence future decisions about their built environments.
This is your opportunity to subscribe to the Historical Atlas of Ripon and be part of creating a legacy for future generations. Subscriptions will be numbered on a first come first served basis. Why not invest in the future by subscribing to be part of Ripon’s history.
Each subscriber (individual, couple, business or institution), with a one-off subscription of £100 or more, will receive a named and numbered edition, and an invitation to the launch of the Atlas in Ripon Cathedral in late October 2027.
