Yorkshire Pilgrimage to Fountains

Ripon Together has organised a mass walk from Ripon Cathedral to Fountains Abbey, tracing the steps of the original founders of the Abbey, to celebrate Yorkshire Walkshire.

A Pilgrimage tracing the steps of the monks in 1132 AD, has been an annual event in Ripon on Boxing Day for the past 45 years.  Last year Covid restrictions prevented the walk so Ripon Together decided to arrange a Yorkshire Summer pilgrimage as part of its Healthy Journeying campaign.  The aim is to get people out walking in Yorkshire following the lifting of Covid restrictions.

The walk will start at 12.30 on Saturday 4 September, led by Canon Barry of the Cathedral, and take about an hour at a leisurely pace.  There are three food outlets at Fountains Abbey.  Two additional concessions will offer cakes and liquid refreshments on the Abbey Green.  Ripon City Band, now in the national premiership of brass bands, will give two sessions including Yorkshire pieces, finishing at about 3.30pm. The Ripon Mummers will also perform.

The Yorkshire Pilgrimage is free to take part, but to ensure a safe journey Ripon Together need to know the numbers attending.  Tickets for the event are available through Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/pilgrimage-from-ripon-cathedral-to-fountains-abbey-tickets-158397195275.   If you cannot access that link, you can also obtain paper numbered tickets from Ripon Cathedral and Fountains Abbey Visitor Centre.
