As part of the Ripon Together Green Fair on 11th October 2025, we are opening up a conversation about the possibility of introducing more 20mph speed limits across our city.

20mph limits have already been adopted in towns and cities across the UK, and the results are encouraging β€” but they also raise some important questions. We’d like to explore both the pros and cons, and most importantly, hear what you think.

Why 20mph? βœ…

Supporters of lower speed limits point to several potential benefits:

  • Safer streets – lower speeds reduce the number and severity of accidents, protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

  • Cleaner air – smoother, slower driving can reduce harmful emissions, helping to improve local air quality.

  • More pleasant places – calmer traffic can make city centres and neighbourhoods more attractive for walking, cycling, and community life.

  • Proven results – in other towns, evidence suggests 20mph zones save lives and contribute to healthier, more liveable communities.

The Challenges ❓

At the same time, there are some clear challenges to consider:

  • Journey times – although differences are often small, some drivers worry about longer travel times.

  • Enforcement – 20mph limits need community support and sometimes additional resources to be effective.

  • Driver frustration – not everyone welcomes a lower limit, and it can create tension between different road users.

  • Impact on business – some argue slower speeds could make deliveries or travel less efficient.

Have Your Say πŸ—£οΈ

We don’t have a fixed position β€” our aim is to start a constructive local debate. That’s why we’ve created a short survey to capture your views on where and how 20mph limits might work in Ripon.

Your feedback will help us shape a balanced discussion at the Green Fair in October, and ensure that any ideas about future speed limits reflect the needs of the whole community.
