The 2026 Ripon Together Green Fair was opened by Ripon Youth Council leader Zoe Ingham with a heartfelt call for greater awareness of the environmental impact of artificial intelligence, particularly its power-hungry data centres.
Her message set the scene for a day of ideas, conversation and practical action at Allhallowgate Church on Saturday 17 October. The fair welcomed 251 visitors, bringing together schools, churches, community organisations and local firms to explore ways of caring for the environment.
The organising team received several offers of help for future events, which are now being followed up to make the 2027 fair even better.
Schools made a valuable contribution, with Grewelthorpe School’s stall attracting considerable interest. Organisers hope to build on that enthusiasm by involving more schools in next year’s fair, particularly through activities led by and involving children. A schools’ competition or debate is also being considered.
The Repair Café was a welcome addition, introducing visitors to the possibilities of repairing everyday items and keeping them in use for longer.
A new food hall showcased environmentally friendly approaches to growing, preparing and using food, with welcome contributions from Manchega restaurant, Swinton Estates, Mallard Grange Farm, Catton Kitchen and Resurrected Bites from Harrogate.
Local businesses including W T Hall Builders, Quandong Retrofit and Energy Oasis were on hand to help visitors understand practical steps towards making their homes more environmentally friendly. Members of the Alderman Spence Trust and Lower Ure Conservation Trust had exciting news about plans for Quarry Moor Nature Reserve.
The fair has also helped encourage Ripon’s churches to work together on climate change activities. This year, local churches’ environmental efforts have been recognised with awards through the prestigious A Rocha Eco Church scheme.
The organisers would like to thank National Trust and Harmony Energy for their financial support, without which the event would not have been possible.
Feedback from the event is already helping shape plans for 2027. Organisers want to provide more hands-on activities, strengthen schools’ involvement and bring food stalls closer to the main exhibition.
Saturday 16 October is the proposed date for the 2027 Green Fair.
